Why Consider Zoloft for Menopause?

Menopause occurs past the age of 40 and is defined as the time when a woman stops menstruating and can no longer have children. Menopause is diagnosed only after menstruation has ceased for one year or longer. More than just the end of menstruation, menopause is a time when many women experience uncomfortable side effects due to the imbalance of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone in the body. Zoloft for menopause is sometimes used to treat side effects which can include anxiety, depression and hot flashes.

Zoloft is an SSRI, or selective serotonin reputake inhibitor. Zoloft is thought of as one of the most well tolerated of the SSRIs. It is also one of the more cost efficient choices. This drug can be used to treat anxiety, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, social anxiety and more. Like the other drugs in its category, it may also help alleviate certain symptoms associated with menopause such as hot flashes. Hot flashes are defined as a flushing of the skin that comes and goes. These flashes are uncomfortably hot and may precede night sweats.

Night sweats is one symptom that may not be helped by an SSRI. Many SSRIs actually cause night sweats, so if this symptom is troublesome for you, speak with your doctor. For some people, SSRI side effects level out after about four to six weeks and become tolerable. It is important to never stop taking an SSRI like Zoloft without the supervision of your doctor. In addition to using antidepressants for your symptoms, your doctor may also direct you to take calcium supplements to reduce your risk of osteoporosis. A good multivitamin is often also recommended, not only for menopausal women but women of all ages.

Zoloft for menopause can be obtained from your physician or psychiatrist. You may want to see a medical professional who is not only skilled in the use of antidepressants but also the treatment of menopausal symptoms. Drugs like Zoloft are often prescribed as alternatives to HRT or hormone replacement therapy. While some women experience great results from HRT, others should not use this type of therapy because of breast cancer risk or distressing side effects that occur. No matter what course of treatment you pursue, you will need to pair up with a trusted physician who can help you safely deal with your menopause symptoms.
