Alternative Treatments for Menopause
If you are looking for alternative treatments for menopause symptoms, you're in luck. There are a variety of remedies that may help alleviate the discomfort associated with menopause. Here
Acupuncture and Acupressure: Both acupuncture and acupressure are thousands of years old and originate from Asia. The big difference between these two therapies is that acupuncture uses needles to stimulate pressure points and acupressure uses massage to stimulate pressure points. The pressure points that are stimulated by the practitioner depend on where discomfort is being experienced. There are more than 300 pressure points which correspond to every part of the body.
Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy is the use of water to relieve discomfort from menopause. An example of using hydrotherapy would be soaking in a hot tub. Even soaking in warm bathwater spiked with soothing herbs can offer relief from hot flashes and profuse sweating. Depending on your bath additives, a bath can soothe tight muscles and relieve stress. Examples include adding eucalyptus for sore muscles, dried sage for night sweats and lavender for stress relief.
Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy is a remedy for menopause symptoms that works well with hydrotherapy. You can add scented oils to your bathwater to experience both therapies at once. Aromatherapy is based on the idea that the sense of smell has a lot to do with the mind and body. Certain scents invoke certain mind/body responses. It's thought that clary sage, for example, may help decrease night sweats.
Herbs: Herbal remedies are yet another treatment for menopausal symptoms. Herbs can be used for everything from physical symptoms like hot flashes to mental symptoms like memory loss and depression. Gingko biloba is often touted as a remedy which increases vitality, sharpens the mind and helps balance the hormones. St. John's Wort is an herb sometimes used as an antidepressant replacement. Black cohosh is an herb that contains phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogen is similar to human estrogen and may actually balance the hormones.
Homeopathy: Homeopathy is one of the most commonly used alternative treatments for menopause. There are all kinds of homeopathic remedies touted as solutions to uncomfortable menopause symptoms. Examples include Sanguinaria canadensis which is commonly used for hot flashes and Nux vomica which is often used to purify the body from caffeine, tobacco and alcohol. Reducing these substances during menopause is important to help the body regulate and heal. Before using homeopathy or any other type of supplement, talk to a qualified medical practitioner.
